Scottland, Greenock Tower Blocks Project.

The first step to using PERMA-ROCK INSULATION is to apply a 120mm thick ROCKWOOL block to the outer surface of the facade using PERMA-ROCK BONDING AGENT and drilling and fixing plugs every 400mm.

Once completed you should make sure the surface has no lumps or bumps as these will be visible when direct sunlight hit the facade.

Once this is complete the complete surface needs to have a bonding coat using PERMA-ROCK BONDING and a mesh is applied into the coating and completely covered and once again fixing to the wall with plugs every 400mm.

The wall Plugs are made out of aluminium and are drilled directly into the original surface with at least 80mm clearance into the original building.

The plugs have a plastic spacing stopper known as a pin applied into the center and when hit through the plug it allows it to grip and make a firm contact with the original facade.

Once all the pins have been applied into the plugs there are covered up using the bonding agent.

Once all the facade has been covered the bonding needs to be coated with a primer the same colour as the K-REND that is going to be applied. In this instance grey and white where used.

Once all the markings are set out after the primer has set its time to apply the final K-REND FINISH. The substance is made up of ground granite and a paint like texture as is applied using a hawk and trowl and then rubbed up using a smooth plastic float for the fine grain finish.

PERMAROCK

OVERVIEW OF PERMAROCK

Established for nearly 30 years and with a wide range of experience designing and manufacturing external wall insulation and rendering systems, PermaRock’s philosophy of bringing performance and experience together with quality and innovation has culminated in the development of its current portfolio of products and services that acknowledge the requirements of the client, designer and end-user, enabling the creation of attractive, innovative and energy efficient buildings that are aesthetically pleasing and functional.

External wall insulation (ewi) is a technology developed to improve the thermal performance of buildings by the application of an insulating layer and a decorative weatherproof finish applied to the external wall surfaces of a building.
The application of an ewi system has a number of positive benefits:
Improved insulation levels lead to a reduction in heat losses and therefore to a reduced energy demand for heating in the winter months.
Higher levels of insulation help to reduce building overheating in the summer months, thereby reducing the energy demand for cooling.
Reduced energy demands result in lower CO2 emissions.
Interstitial or internal condensation on walls can be eliminated, and the attendant problems of damp internal surfaces and mould growth are overcome.
The building fabric can be protected against the effects of the weather by the insulated cladding.
The building structure is protected from daily environmental temperature changes. Fluctuations in internal temperatures are reduced, leading to more comfortable living and working conditions.

Run Mouldings & Ornamental Plasterwork

Run Mouldings & Ornamental Plasterwork

The use of decorative cornice and mouldings is evident in many houses and stately homes and repairs may become necessary for various reasons. A ceiling may collapse following water damage or insect infestation in the lathes or joists above or cornices may need to be replicated following alterations or conversions.

These decorative features can be repaired or replaced either by making a new running mould and running on a bench or by running the mouldings or cornice in situe.

These principles can apply to either interior or exterior mouldings or cornice.

Internal Plastering

Internal Plastering
Interior plastering may be carried out for numerous reasons, new buildings require a finish to be applied to the new walls, alterations and extensions may be undertaken and old buildings may require major refurbishment. If the building is listed then it is likely that the repairs and renovations will have to be carried out under the guidance of the local conservation and planning departments using traditional materials. Various materials my be utilised on interior walls and ceilings, such as;-

- Hand riven or sawn lathes in chestnut or oak
- Traditional Lime Putty Plasters
- Earth Plasters
- Gypsum Based Plasters – more commonly used on new build.
- Sand and Cement Render

All of these materials can be applied to interior walls and all of them can be finished to an acceptably smooth surface. Do not be misled into believing that traditional methods and materials automatically mean uneven, untidy finishes!!!

Exterior Plastering, Rendering or Stucco

Exterior Plastering, Rendering or Stucco.

Exterior walls will usually need to be finished with plaster unless the walls are constructed of brick or timber. New buildings constructed with breeze blocks will usually be finished with sand and cement render whilst old buildings undergoing repair and restoration will be better suited to the use of traditional materials such as Lime Renders. If the building is listed then it is likely that the work will have to be carried out under the guidance of the local conservation and planning department using traditional materials.

There are various external decorative finishes including Ashlar, Rustication and Roughcast.

Introduction

Introduction
There is far more to the Art of Plastering than it would appear at first glance.
It is not uncommon to receive an enquiry from a potential customer who is unaware that the Plasterers Craft encompasses more than just “The Pink Stuff”.

We would like to use this website to inform you about the variety of skills and techniques that a fully experienced plasterer may utilise.

Benn Towning left school in 2001 and immediately took an apprenticeship with a local plastering contractor where he received thorough training in all aspects of the Modern Plastering Trade.
In 2008 he started his own business and since then he has diversified into the use of Traditional Materials and Skills.

Benn is a member of The Building Limes Forum and The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. He is regularly called upon to demonstrate on Home Owner and Builders Courses run by the SPAB as well as demonstrating at The Grand Designs Live Exhibition in London’s Docklands, Inter-build at the NEC and The Listed Property Owners Club Show at Olympia.
He is also a member of The Plasterers Craft Guild and an Associate Member of The Worshipful Company of Plasterers.

Benn feels that it is important to encourage a younger generation to become tradesmen and especially to preserve the traditional plastering skills. He has now trained three apprentices to become plasterers by supporting them through college with assistance from the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board).the fourth trainee will complete his college course during this summer.
